HC Deb 10 November 1942 vol 383 c2283W
Mr. W. Joseph Stewart

asked the Minister of Health the percentage of overcrowding in the administrative county of Durham and the county boroughs of Sunderland and South Shields, respectively; and the percentage for the country?

Mr. E. Brown

The latest information available relates to the year ended 31st December, 1938, at which date the percentages of overcrowded houses on the standard laid down in the Housing Act, 1936, were—Durham Administrative County, 5.6; Sunderland County Borough, 21.2; South Shields County Borough, 9.7; England and Wales, 1.8. Since the date mentioned there has, of course, been a considerable movement of population, the result of which has been a net reduction in the population of the county and county boroughs named.
