HC Deb 10 November 1942 vol 383 c2270W
Dr. Little

asked the Minister of Production whether the Government will follow the lead of the United States of America and Canada by taking over and employing the whisky-making plants in this country for the manufacture of alcohol for military purposes?

Mr. Garro Jones

The United States and Canada have ample material and capacity for the manufacture of alcohol. As a considerable saving of shipping is effected by importing industrial alcohol instead of the raw material required to make it here, the amount of distilling in this country has been reduced and most distilleries including those normally used for whisky are now out of use, or used for storage.
