asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury (1) the number of building societies in the United Kingdom, their total membership and their total funds for the year ended 1941, or the nearest available date;

(2) the number of industrial and provident societies, their total membership and their total funds for the year ended 1941, or the nearest available date;

(3) the number of friendly societies, their total membership and their total funds for the year ended 1941, or the nearest available date?

The latest date for which figures are at present available is 31st December, 1940. The figures at that date were:

to prepare engines or run trains during the hours of darkness and the representations made to him by the trade union, what action he is taking in the matter?

A recent case in which a driver has been fined for contravening the Lighting Regulations while removing an engine fire has been brought to the notice of my right hon. Friend. The matter is being investigated and I will communicate with my hon. Friend. I am not aware of any other cases of a similar nature. It has been brought to my notice that the matter was considered by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, Walthamstow branch, but I am not able to trace any representations made to my right hon. Friend from the trade union.
