HC Deb 25 March 1942 vol 378 cc2005-6W
Colonel Carver

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the fact that the Fighting Services, munitions works and many Government Departments are now working a seven-day week in the interests of the war, he will arrange for agriculture equally to be operated on a seven-day week basis with the necessary additional labour supplied by part-time voluntary workers?

Mr. Hudson

I am sure farmers and farm workers will not hesitate to work all possible hours in their vital tasks of food production, but they clearly need regular rest days and, moreover, although part-time workers are giving valuable assistance in many parts of the country—particularly during seasonal pressure—the number of persons free to give such help regularly is much too small to enable farms as a whole to be run on a seven-day basis.
