HC Deb 25 March 1942 vol 378 cc2015-6W
Mr. Martin

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War how much petrol was stolen from Army stores; and how much petrol had to be written off unaccounted for in the year ended 31st December, 1941?

Mr. Sandys

The figures are not available,- but the amount involved in relation to the total consumption is certainly very small indeed.

Sir L. Lyle

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he is aware of the waste of petrol involved in taking cooked meals round to outlying posts in large Army lorries; and whether arrangements can be made to make such units more independent?

Mr. Sandys

The use of unnecessarily large vehicles for carrying small loads is already forbidden and if my hon. Friend can give particulars of such use I shall be glad to look into them. I am at present looking into the centralised cooking system by which small detached units are now fed.
