HC Deb 19 March 1942 vol 378 c1675W
Mr. Barr

asked the Secretary of State for India on what grounds he estimates the number of Momins who disavow the Moslem League as being 4,000,000 to 5,000,000?

Mr. Amery

In view of the fact that, according to the Census report for 1931, the Momins then numbered only a little over 3,000,000, I could hardly give credence to the suggestion that they had grown to 45,000,000 since that date and considered a Press version of the telegram sent by the All-India Momin Conference, giving the figure as 4,000,000 to 5,000,000 as being obviously nearer the mark. I will however make further inquiry into the matter as I have received further telegrams asserting that the figure I gave was incorrect. I should add that I have also had a telegram from the President of the Momin Conference, presumably a separate body, claiming that, politically, the Momins are solidly behind the Moslem League.
