§ Wing-Commander Hulbertasked the Secretary of State for Air whether, in order to conserve petrol and rubber, he will direct that, on one day a week, all units, other than operational, will not use mechanical transport except under the 1532W most urgent necessity and then only on the personal authorisation of the commanding officer?
§ Sir A. SinclairI am satisfied that an instruction on the lines suggested would be impracticable. The work of all Royal Air Force formations, including those devoted to training, is closely connected with the operational effort, which is, of course, continuous, and establishments of mechanical transport vehicles are framed on the minimum scales necessary to meet day-to-day requirements. Strict economy in the use of tyres, petrol and oil is enforced and the possibility of introducing further economies is under constant review.
