HC Deb 30 June 1942 vol 381 c52W
Sir R. Young

asked the President of the Board of Education what number of elementary teachers have been withdrawn for military service who were employed by the Lancashire Education Committee and in the country generally; and whether there is any arrangement whereby headmasters of secondary and grammar schools are exempt, as in the case of the recently-appointed headmaster of Bristol grammar school to Harrow?

Mr. Butler

My information is that something over 15,000 public elementary schoolmasters in England and Wales have been withdrawn for military service but I have no figures for separate authorities. Arrangements have been made with the Ministry of Labour for the deferment of the calling up of headmasters in all types of school who had passed the age of 30 at the date of their registration.
