HC Deb 24 June 1942 vol 380 c1988W
Mr. E. Williams

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Buildings the total tonnage of scrap which has been obtained; and the sources from which it has been obtained.

Mr. Hicks

The total tonnage of metal scrap which has been obtained through action taken by my Department to augment normal trade supplies is now over 1,000,000 tons, of which railings have provided no less than 200,000 tons. The other sources of supply have been steel from buildings, damaged by enemy action and from the "national survey," which includes the metal from dumps, collieries, railways and similar undertakings.

The hon. Member will be interested to know that to manufacture 1,000,000 tons of metal it would have required 3,000,000 tons of iron ore and 2,000,000 tons of coal. Therefore important shipping and transport space has been saved, together with much valuable fuel.
