HC Deb 23 July 1942 vol 382 cc195-6W
Mr. Perkins

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that in the West of England, builders' emergency organisations were formed at the express wish of the Government; whether he has placed any contracts with these organisations; and whether he proposes to place any in the near future?

Sir J. Grigg

I am aware that builders' emergency organisations have been set up in various parts of the country under the auspices of the Ministry of Works and Planning as consultative and advisory bodies. They do not undertake contracts and the War Department has placed no contracts with them.

Mr. Perkins

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that, in the West of England, builders' emergency organisations were formed at the express wish of the Government; whether he has placed any contracts with these organisations; and whether he proposes to place any in the near future?

Mr. Alexander

The answer to the first part of the Question is "Yes." As to the second part, these organisations are purely advisory in their functions. The last part of the Question does not therefore arise.
