HC Deb 21 January 1942 vol 377 cc371-2W
Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that considerable damage is being done to the roads in St. Lucia owing to the heavy transport using them on the base work; and whether, in view of the reciprocal terms of the treaty under which neither the United States Government nor the British Government pay taxes on motor vehicles, it is proposed to give financial assistance to the local government to meet the additional cost of road maintenance?

Mr. George Hall

The question of road maintenance in all the West Indian Colonies, in which American bases are situated, is at present under discussion with the Government of the United States of America.
