Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the personnel and terms of reference of the committee recently appointed to examine conditions of the herring industry; and whether this committee were appointed jointly by himself and the Minister of Agriculture, so as to include both English and Scottish conditions within the scope of its survey?

Mr. Johnston

Yes, Sir. I am glad to say that my right hon. and gallant Friend the Member for North Midlothian (Colonel Colville) has agreed to be Chairman of this Committee. The other members are:

  • Mr. F. A. Bell, M.C.
  • Mr. Geoffrey Bracey.
  • Provost W. W. Carstairs, J.P.
  • Mr. H. A. Edwards, C.A.
  • Mr. D. Hillman.
  • Mr. James Watt.

The Committee has been appointed, on the recommendation of the Scottish Council of Ex-Secretaries, by myself in conjunction with the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Home Secretary. Its terms of reference are:—
