§ Mr. BevinI regret that I am not yet in a position to make a comprehensive statement about the position under the National Service Acts and the Registration for Employment Order of women students at universities who come within the registered age groups The Committee of Vice Chancellors will be shortly submitting their reasoned recommendations and I have agreed with its chairman, Sir Franklin Sibly, to suspend a final decision on policy until this document has been received and considered by me in consultation with my right hon. Friend, the President of the Board of Education. Meanwhile I have publicly announced and have informed the Chairman of the Vice Chancellors' Committee that full-time women students at universities who make satisfactory progress in their studies will not be called up under the National Service Acts during the current academic year.
