HC Deb 03 February 1942 vol 377 c1059W
Mr. Mander

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he is aware of the serious effect of the milk restriction scheme on milk bars; that they are not equipped to serve main meals; and that the effect of the application will be to reduce supplies in many instances by go per cent., making the continuation of the business impossible; and whether he will take steps to prevent this?

Major Lloyd George

Milk bars were set up to encourage the consumption of milk at a time when supplies were plentiful. The recent shortage has made it impossible for them to be allowed supplies on the scale to which they have been used. The greater restriction on supplies in their case results not from any different treatment from other catering establishments but from the nature of their previous business. It is not practicable to treat milk bars differently from other sections of the catering trade.
