HC Deb 17 December 1942 vol 385 cc2101-2W
Sir E. Graham-Little

asked the Minister of Health in how many instances he has overruled resolutions taken by the Central Medical War Committee with regard to allocation of medical man-power; whether there is any appeal from decisions of that committee; and, if so, in what form it should be made?

Mr. E. Brown

I assume that my hon. Friend is referring to the recommendations made by the Central Medical War Committee, with due regard to the medical needs of the civilian population, for the recruitment of individual doctors to serve as medical officers in the Forces. In a comparatively few cases, the number of which I cannot give without a special analysis of the records, I have decided that recruitment should be postponed for varying periods and, with negligible exceptions, the Committee has on reconsideration concurred in my view. No formal appeals are involved in this procedure. A doctor may, however, apply for postponement of calling up on grounds of personal hardship or for registration as a conscientious objector in the same way as any other person liable to recruitment.
