HC Deb 17 December 1942 vol 385 cc2115-6W
Mr. David Adams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that recently a raid was made upon the offices and homes of three members of the executive of the People's National Party of Jamaica, books and private papers being seized and certain members arrested and imprisoned without trial; and whether he will take steps to see that the Government hold a public and impartial investigation into these incidents?

Colonel Stanley

The answer to the first part of the Question is in the affirmative. Action against these persons was taken under Regulation 18 (1) of the Jamaica Defence Regulations, 1940, which corresponds to Regulation 18B of the United Kingdom Defence Regulations. They have a, right of appeal to the Advisory Committee in Jamaica and I am not prepared to request the Governor to hold a special inquiry into the matter.
