HC Deb 17 December 1942 vol 385 cc2100-1W
Sir P. Harris

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the landlords of certain flats in Central London have raised rents from the pre-war figure of £100 to £120, although the increase in local rates used as justification for raising rents is only approximately 1d. per week, or 4s. 4d. a year; that flats upon which no rates have been paid while unoccupied are now being let as furnished in order to evade the Rent Restrictions Act, although such furniture consists of landlords' fixtures only; and whether, in view of the hardships caused to tenants, he will look into these matters?

Mr. E. Brown

I am always glad to make inquiries concerning any case of this kind which is brought to my notice, and if my hon. Friend will send me particulars of the premises to which he refers in the first part of the Question I will look into the matter. As regards the second part I would draw his attention to Section 10 of the Rent and Mortgage Interest Restrictions Act, 1923.
