§ Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that the British Council in their house at Liverpool have set apart a room for the exclusive use of white Americans, to which no coloured Americans are admitted; and whether, as the British Council is financed by the British Government and the declared policy of this country is against the imposition of any colour bar, he will have the matter investigated?
§ Mr. LawThe public rooms at the Allied Centre at Liverpool are used by white and coloured persons alike, including United States citizens, and there is no question of any colour bar. There are in addition private rooms reserved for particular nationalities. The decision as to the use to which the room reserved for United States citizens should be put was taken by the local hospitality committee. If the local committee decide in the light of local circumstances to reserve individual rooms for special purposes, that is not a matter in which the British Council would think it desirable to intervene.
