HC Deb 09 December 1942 vol 385 c1579W
Mr. David Adams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that there are some 1,500 licensed medical men and 800 licensed barristers in Palestine; that many of the former are employed as labourers upon the roads whilst many of the latter are without employment; and will he cause an amendment to be made in the Coroners Ordinance of 1926, enabling the High Commissioner to appoint members of both professions who are of five years' standing to act as coroners instead of appointing overworked district officers who seldom perform their duties as coroners and have no medical, legal or educational qualifications?

Colonel Stanley

I am consulting the High Commissioner for Palestine with regard to this proposal; and, when I have received his comments, I will communicate with my hon. Friend in the matter. With regard to the last part of the Question, I may add that administrative officers are in fact required to pass examinations in law and procedure.
