§ Sir R. Glynasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the policy of the Government regarding Spain and Portugal; and whether any schemes for economic and other unions between the two countries in the Iberian Peninsula have been laid before His Majesty's Government for their support.
§ Mr. EdenAs regards the first part of the Question, I would refer my hon.1176W Friend to the special communiqué issued by His Majesty's Government on 8th November and to the Prime Minister's statement on 10th November, when he said that our only policy towards Spain and Portugal was that they should be independent and free, prosperous and at peace. He added that Britain and the United States would do all that they could to enrich the economic life of the Iberian Peninsula. The answer to the second part of the Question is in the negative.
