asked the Minister of Fuel and Power how many mines are at work in Nottinghamshire, the number using ponies; and the percentage of output carried by conveyors?

The information, so far as it is available, is as follows:

Number of mines at work, year ended 31st December, 1941 48
Number of mines using horses at 30th June, 1942 40
Percentage of output carried by conveyors in the year 1941 85

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power how many mechanisation officers have been appointed in the Durham and Northumberland coalfields, respectively; whether they have already taken up their duties; and whether he considers that American power-loaders can be advantageously employed in these areas?

A mechanisation officer has been appointed for the Northumberland coalfield and has taken up his duties. The appointment of a mechanisation officer for Durham is under discussion. As regards the last part of the Question, there may well be opportunities
