HC Deb 06 August 1942 vol 382 cc1233-4W
Mr. De la Bère

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps the Government are taking to make provision for some allowance to dependants of Civil Defence personnel in Malaya, having regard to the provision that has been made for loyal defence volunteers who served in this campaign?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

As I stated in my reply to a Question by the hon. and gallant Member for Hornsey (Captain Gammans) on the 13th May [Official Report, Vol. 379, cols. 1724–5], no special provision is being made for the payment of allowances to dependants of Civil Defence personnel as distinct from other members of the civil community in Malaya. Any such dependants who may be in special need are eligible to receive assistance under the arrangements which exist in the United Kingdom and have been set up in the oversea territories in which they are now living. Supplementary assistance will also be possible out of the Fund which I mentioned in my reply to a Question by the hon. and gallant Member for Ayr Burghs (Sir T. Moore) on 25th June [Official Report, Vol. 380, cols. 2159–60].
