HC Deb 06 August 1942 vol 382 c1210W
Mr. Harvey

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Warfare what further progress has been made in the arrangements for the supply of urgently needed food to the civilian population of Greece, including the islands, and for safe conducts for the ships employed for this purpose?

Mr. Foot

Five Swedish vessels which are to be employed in carrying wheat from Canada to Greece have now received Axis safe-conducts, and were due to sail from Gothenburg yesterday. These are in addition to the three vessels to which I referred in my answer of 15th July. The s.s. "Hallaren" sailed from Haifa on 1st August, carrying 1,000 tons of flour for discharge at Smyrna in transit for the Greek islands, and 1,245 tons of flour and 2,264 tons of wheat for discharge at Piraeus for relief in the Greek mainland.
