HC Deb 05 August 1942 vol 382 c1050W
Mr. Radford

asked the Chanceller of the Exchequer whether he is prepared to examine a proposal to transfer a large tonnage of copper from the existing coinage to munitions and, whilst retaining a sufficient number of pennies in circulation for use in slot machines, to issue a much smaller and lighter new coin representing a tenth of the unaltered 1s. for ordinary hand-to-hand trading?

Sir K. Wood

This proposal has already been examined and found to be impracticable.
