HC Deb 11 September 1941 vol 374 c342W
Mr. E. Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply whether we are obtaining in this country the maximum production of steel by the utilisation of our full capacity; if not, why not; and what is the percentage of production above or below the peak pre-war year?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

It would not be in the public interest to give the details for which the hon. Member asks, but he can rest assured that our steel capacity is being employed to the fullest extent within the limits and types of the raw materials available.

Mr. Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply whether he is satisfied with the organisation of the steel industry and the prices which are being paid for supplies of steel?

Mr. Macmillan

The steel industry is working to a high level of efficiency. The system of price control in operation was devised to ensure that supplies of steel should be available at reasonable prices.
