HC Deb 11 September 1941 vol 374 cc323-4W
Colonel Colville

asked the Secretary of State for War on what grounds it was decided to discontinue the payment of tradesmen's rate of pay to radiolocation operators; and whether this decision will be reversed in view of the skilled nature of this work?

Captain Margesson

It was decided to remove the trade of operator (fire control) from the list of Army trades with effect from 31st January, 1941, as it was considered that the duties performed did not warrant a continuation of the trade grading. Under the normal rules, men who were at that date mustered in the trade in question Were entitled to retain their tradesmen's rates of pay for a period of six months, and it has since been decided to allow the men concerned to retain their rates for a further period up to 31st October, 1941, whilst they remain employed on the same duties. In the meantime, the whole question is under review.
