HC Deb 11 September 1941 vol 374 cc309-10W
Mr. T. Smith

asked the Secretary for Mines what measures he proposes to draw attention to the need for economy in the use of fuels this winter and to ensure that the supplies available are used with the greatest possible efficiency?

Mr. Grenfell

As forecast in earlier statements in this House, the Government has during the past month instituted a comprehensive campaign for the greatest possible economy in fuel consumption, covering not only coal and coke, but gas, electricity, fuel oil and paraffin as well, and extending both to industrial and non-industrial use. On the industrial side an expert committee under the chairmanship of Dr. E. S. Grumell of Imperial Chemical Industries has been appointed to advise on the many technical aspects of fuel economy, working in conjunction with a staff of combustion engineers that have been placed at the disposal of the Department by the Coal Utilisation Joint Council. On the non-industrial side representatives of all the supplying interests are collaborating with the Government Departments concerned in propaganda on a wide front for the same purposes. I am glad to find that in this matter Government Departments themselves are setting a good example in fuel economy.
