HC Deb 11 September 1941 vol 374 c315W
Mr. G. Griffiths

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the amount of annual grant previously paid to the British Academy; and why has it been withdrawn?

Sir K. Wood

The amount of the grant in aid of the British Academy was £2,000 for each of the years 1935 to 1939. In 1940 the grant was suspended as a war economy. For 1941 provision has been made for a grant of £1,000 on the understanding that it is devoted to the preservation of learned societies whose existence would otherwise be endangered by the war.
