Steps have already been taken, in co-operation with local authorities, for the removal of disused tramrails; and over 40 per cent. of the total estimated tonnage available has so far been recovered. Ordinary railings, which do not serve any useful function, are also to be removed to assist the war effort, but steps are being taken to ensure that railings of special artistic merit or historic interest are not taken.
