Dr. Russell Thomasasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in view of the accelerating demand for currency, and after consideration of such factors as increased war production on the one hand and the effects of rationing on the other, he is satisfied that there is not considerable hoarding of currency?
§ Sir K. WoodIt is, of course, difficult to say with confidence what are the main causes of the continuing increase in the public demand for currency, but it seems likely that a certain amount of current savings is being accumulated in the form of bank notes. I would appeal to all who are holding notes in that way to deposit them in a savings bank or other bank, where the money will be readily available in case of need. By that means they will not only avoid any risk of the destruction or loss of the notes, but they will also be helping to finance the war effort.
