HC Deb 04 March 1941 vol 369 c792W
Sir P. Harris

asked the Postmaster-General why the Post Office is now charging 6½d. for a 6d. registered envelope on the grounds that they have to cover the Purchase Tax; and whether the Post Office is paying the tax?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

The price of registered envelopes has been raised to cover increased manufacturing costs and Purchase Tax. The Post Office pays Purchase Tax on these items.
