HC Deb 05 September 1940 vol 365 c29W
Mr. Price

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will make a statement concerning the present situation in Indo-China; what representations have been recently made to the Government of Indo-China; and whether His Majesty's Government has been in touch with the Governments of the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in this connection?

Mr. Butler

Reports have reached His Majesty's Government that certain demands were presented to the Government of Indo-China by a Japanese military mission which recently arrived in that country and that these demands were refused by the French authorities. On receipt of this information, His Majesty's Ambassador at Tokyo was instructed to draw the attention of the Japanese Government to the reports we had received and at the same time to remind them of the interest of His Majesty's Government in the preservation of the status quo in Indo-China. My Noble Friend has nothing further to add at present.
