§ Mr. Rhys Daviesasked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that internees, on release, are not allowed to communicate with their friends living at a distance, either by telephone, telegraph, or letter; that this is causing considerable hardship; and will he cancel this prohibition?
§ Mr. PeakeIf the hon. Member is referring to the facilities available to an internee to communicate with his friends, before he has been actually set free, I have not hitherto heard of any hardship in this connection. It is not practicable to allow an internee to telephone from a camp, but he can write, and commandants have discretion to allow telegrams in cases of urgency. I may add that, where an internee's friends or relatives have been in communication with the Home Office in the matter, they are notified that his release has been authorised.
