HC Deb 21 March 1940 vol 358 cc2136-7W
Mr. Lunn

asked the Minister of Labour how many men have been called up under the Military Training Act, 1939, Up to date; how many have registered as conscientious objectors; and how many have obtained exemption under the hardship clause?

Mr. E. Brown

It would not be in the public interest to give the numbers of men who have been called up for service in the Armed Forces. The total number of men registered under the Military Training Act and Armed Forces Act up to date is about 1,270,000. Up to 9th March, 1940, 25,801 men had registered provisionally as conscientious objectors. Postponement on the ground of exceptional hardship had been granted under the Armed Forces Act to 11,768 men up to 29th February.
