HC Deb 21 March 1940 vol 358 c2155W
Mr. Jackson

asked the Minister of Food whether he now expects any surplus of last year's potatoes, and, if so, what is likely to be the amount of this surplus; and what exactly is going to be done with the 5s. levy which is being collected in respect of such potatoes?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

It is not yet possible to form a reliable estimate of what the surplus of potatoes will be at the end of the season, but a census of stocks is being taken. It is provided by Order that the proceeds of the levy shall be paid into a Potato Fund which, after defraying the expenses of the Ministry in connection with the scheme of control, shall be applied by my right hon. Friend in accordance with arrangements approved by the Treasury. Consideration will be given to the question of the arrangements when the prospective surplus position can be more clearly ascertained.
