HC Deb 21 March 1940 vol 358 c2158W
Mr. Gledhill

asked the Secretary of State for War whether Army motor cars and motor lorries are subject to the normal regulations regarding upkeep, licensing and speed?

Mr. Stanley

Yes, Sir, except that, in war time. War Department vehicles are exempt from normal registration and licensing and carry identification numbers issued under War Office authority, and that, when necessary on special occasions, unit commanders may give authority, which must be in writing, to drivers of vehicles which are of a type restricted to a maximum speed to exceed that speed. Speed limits which apply to all vehicles have however, to be observed by drivers of War Department vehicles without exception.
