HC Deb 04 July 1940 vol 362 c1027W
Mr. Mander

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the French Government at Bordeaux, now under German control, is still recognised by the British Government?

Mr. Butler

His Majesty's Ambassador to France and his staff withdrew from France on 23rd July in view of the imminent approach of the German forces. The Government of Marshal Pétain is still represented in this country by the French Embassy, of which the Counsellor of the Embassy has assumed charge. It is not yet possible to speak with certainty as to the conduct of our relations with the Government of Marshal Pétain.
