HC Deb 04 July 1940 vol 362 cc1036-7W
Mr. A. Edwards

asked the Home Secretary what steps are being taken in connection with aliens internment arrangement to ensure that important war work is not jeopardised, and whether he will arrange for interned aliens who are serving the British Government with scientific assistance to be available for essential consultation?

Sir J. Anderson

Arrangements have been made to give special consideration to individual cases where it is established that the person concerned is well disposed towards this country and it is represented to me by the Government Department concerned that the release of the alien from internment would help to further the national war effort.

Mr. A. Edwards

asked the Home Secretary whether he will make arrangements for aliens with scientific knowledge, and willing to serve the British Government, to be formed into a colony under proper supervision so that they may utilise and develop their pooled knowledge in the furtherance of our war effort?

Sir J. Anderson

I do not think it would be practicable to give effect to the hon. Member's suggestion but I have already taken steps to exempt, or to release, from internment any scientist in respect of whom I am satisfied that he is well disposed to this country and is willing and able to assist the national war effort.
