HC Deb 21 February 1940 vol 357 c1369W
Miss Wilkinson

asked the Minister of Food whether, in view of the need for increasing the supply of nutritive foods, he will forbid the use of milk for the manufacture of any non-edible articles?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

I understand that whole milk is not used for the manufacture of non-edible articles. Skim milk, of which a very small proportion is used in peace-time for producing certain manufactured articles, is not at present being used for non-edible products

Mr. W. Roberts

asked the Minister of Food whether he is aware that the latest Milk (Retail Maximum Prices) Order permits an increase of 4d. per gallon in the retail price of milk in many rural districts and small towns; and whether before making this order the Milk Marketing Board was consulted?

Mr. Morrison

The Order in question does not permit of any increase in price over the January prices, whilst reductions in prices for February are not precluded by the Order, which fixed maximum and not minimum prices. Previous to the Order being issued, the Ministry's Advisory Committee, which includes representatives of all branches of the industry, including the Milk Marketing Board for England and Wales, was consulted on a proposal for modifying the previous Order, but opinion on the committee was divided
