HC Deb 21 February 1940 vol 357 c1387W
Mr. Shinwell

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that recipients of unemployment assistance in the Seaham area are being asked to produce industrial assurance policies; and will he give an explanation for this action?

Mr. E. Brown

I am informed by the Unemployment Assistance Board that applicants for unemployment assistance in the Seaham area are not asked to produce industrial assurance policies. Information about life assurances is, however, frequently required in connection with applications to the War Service Grants Advisory Committee for special allowances by members of the Forces, or their dependants, and officers of the board investigate these cases on behalf of the committee. It is the practice of the board's officers to explain that the investigation is being made on behalf of the War Service Grants Advisory Committee and not of the board.
