HC Deb 06 February 1940 vol 357 c70W
Major Carver

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is yet in a position to give any estimate of the extent of the response to the campaign for increasing the area devoted to horticulture; and whether, in view of the approach of the planting season, he will make arrangements to intensify the campaign urging the public to devote more attention to developing their allotments and gardens for this purpose?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

Returns are now being received from local authorities showing what has been done to facilitate the cultivation of war-time allotments. Full information as to the results is not yet available, but there is ample evidence that the local authorities have taken and are continuing to take active steps to stimulate public interest in the campaign. So far as the Ministry is concerned, apart from measures of general publicity including broadcast talks, numerous local meetings and conferences have been and will be held.
