HC Deb 06 August 1940 vol 363 c47W
Sir P. Hannon

asked the Home Secretary whether he will arrange that in future it shall be compulsory for anyone applying for a public house licence, or for the registration of a club, to state his or her nationality?

Mr. Peake

I am informed that in the Metropolitan Police District it is the practice for the police to ascertain the nationality of an applicant for a licence and to bring it to the notice of the licensing justices. I have no doubt that it is a common practice for the police elsewhere to do the same. As regards clubs, I understand that the police who keep a close watch on the activities of clubs have no difficulty in ascertaining the nationality of any person who registers a club and of any persons known to be concerned in its management. As at present advised, my right hon. Friend does not think that any provision for a compulsory statement of nationality is necessary.
