§ Mr. Keelingasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will reconsider the suggestion of a supplementary issue of savings certificates, at a lower rate of 483W interest, to holders of the present maximum of 500 certificates?
§ Sir J. SimonThe issue of 3 per cent. Defence Bonds was designed to meet the point raised by my hon. Friend, and the results appear to show that this form of security is well designed to meet the requirements of the smaller investor.
Mr. Temple Morrisasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether any attempt is being made, or will be made, to arrange for War Savings Certificates to be on sale in the different British Colonies?
§ Captain CrookshankColonial residents who wish to purchase National Savings Certificates may do so by direct application to the Money Order Department, London. Careful consideration has been given to the possibilities of placing these securities on sale throughout the Colonial Empire, but it has been found that practical difficulties render such a course impracticable. I may add, however, that the Government have received numerous requests for the provision of facilities whereby Colonial residents may purchase locally securities which will enable them to lend their money towards the cost of the United Kingdom's war effort, and that the best means of responding to these requests is under active and sympathetic consideration.
