HC Deb 26 September 1939 vol 351 c1230W
Mr. Noel-Baker

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that, under the scale of separation allowances, the wife of a soldier with five children receives only 36s. per week, the allowance in respect of each of the two youngest children being is. per week; and whether the scale can be reviewed and the allowances for children, at any rate, brought more into line with the allowances in respect of evacuated children?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

The allowance which is given to assist a soldier to maintain his family is not analogous to the allowance given to a householder for the reception of evacuated children. The families of Regular soldiers on normal attestations also obtain certain other advantages, such as medical attention in certain cases, travelling expenses, and certain issues of rations at stations abroad. Soldiers serving for the war also have access to the Military Service (Special Allowances) Advisory Committee.
