HC Deb 26 September 1939 vol 351 c1232W
Captain Plugge

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Information whether it is proposed to restart the television service, on the ground that it would be particularly appropriate during black-outs, as the light used would not be seen outside the house; why it was stopped; and whether, if cost is the difficulty, the licence fee could be increased in the case of television sets?

Sir E. Grigg

My Noble Friend appreciates the considerations referred to, but he regrets that he cannot hold out hope of an early resumption of this service. The service was suspended in the national interest on the outbreak of war and the question of cost was not the sole, or the principal ground upon which suspension was considered necessary.
