HC Deb 20 September 1939 vol 351 c966W
Sir L. Ward

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the growing practice of leaving motor cars parked by the roadside all night unattended and unlighted; and whether, in view of the danger caused thereby to passing traffic, he will take steps to put a stop to this practice?

Sir J. Anderson

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that in the first few days of the black-out a number of cars were left standing without lights, probably because their owners had not reduced their lighting as required by the Lighting (Restrictions) Order. The Commissioner issued special instructions, however, warning the police to see that the obligatory lights were displayed on all standing vehicles and as a result the position has now improved. I have no doubt that the police in other parts of the country are giving similar attention to this point.
