§ Sir W. Jenkinsasked the Minister of Labour whether he can state the number of coal miners, or mine workers, in South Wales between 45 and 60 years of age, who are unemployed; and what steps are being taken to have them re-employed in the mines or elsewhere?
§ Mr. E. BrownI regret that those figures are not available. The hon. Member will be aware that unemployment in the coal-mining industry in Wales is at its lowest level for many years. In view of the heavy demand for coal in wartime there is every likelihood that the position will continue to improve and I am confident that this will bring increased opportunity for the employment of the older men.
