At nth September, 1939, the numbers of insured persons, aged 16–64, in the coal-mining industry recorded as unemployed were 49,588 in England (excluding Monmouthshire), 9 687 in Scotland, and 17,292 in Wales and Monmouthshire, making a total of 76,567.
