§ Mr. Whiteasked the Secretary for Mines whether it is intended to ration the supply of gas for lighting and heating; and what effect this will have on the output of benzol and other coal-tar products which are needed for the prosecution of the war?
§ Mr. LloydThe supply of gas is rationed to non-industrial and small industrial premises but not to industry generally. Some decline in the production of by-products may result from rationing, but this should be offset by reason of increased industrial consumption of gas and increased activity at coke ovens. It is from the latter that the largest supplies of benzol are obtained. As regards benzol production, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member for Consett (Mr. David Adams) on 3rd October.
