Mr. David Adamsasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has a statement to make as to the progress of land settlement schemes in Jamaica; and in how many cases the clause in the agreement requiring a deposit has been waived?
Mr. M. MacDonald:The purchase of 42 properties, comprising approximately 47,138 acres, has been authorised since May, 1938. The number of persons settled on the land since that date is approximately 7,000. The requirement of an initial deposit of 10 per cent. has been waived in the case of 106 applications for land.
